Common Questions About AODA Signs

What AODA signs does my Ontario business need?

Under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and O.Reg 191/11 (Integrated Accessibility Standards), Ontario businesses open to the public must provide accessible entrance identification, washroom signs with Grade 2 Braille and raised tactile characters, stairwell floor indicators, and directional signage to accessible exits. Accessible parking signage is additionally governed by the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.

What are the AODA braille sign specifications in Ontario?

AODA braille signs must use Grade 2 (contracted) Braille with dome-shaped dots 1.5mm in diameter, spaced 2.3mm centre-to-centre. Text must be raised 0.8mm minimum from the sign surface, use a sans-serif font, be 16–50mm character height, and maintain a minimum 70% contrast ratio between text and background. Signs must be mounted 1,200–1,500mm from finished floor to sign centre, on the latch side of the door.

What size must an accessible parking sign be in Ontario?

Ontario accessible parking signs must display the International Symbol of Access (ISA) and comply with Ontario Highway Traffic Act specifications. Standard sign sizes are 12×18 inches for most installations. Reflective aluminum substrate is recommended for exterior use to maintain visibility in low-light conditions.

When did Ontario AODA signage compliance become mandatory?

AODA Design of Public Spaces Standards (O.Reg 413/12) and the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (O.Reg 191/11) set staged compliance deadlines. Large organisations (50+ employees) were required to comply by January 1, 2016. Small private sector organisations (1–49 employees) had a deadline of January 1, 2017. Ongoing penalties for non-compliance start at $100,000/day for corporations.
