What is a
CVOR number?
A Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration (CVOR) number is the identifier assigned by Ontario's Ministry of Transportation to covered commercial carriers. In Ontario, the certificate must be carried in the vehicle; exterior CVOR display is not mandated by O.Reg 424/97.
It links your operation to MTO's safety monitoring system and certificate records. Exterior fleet lettering is still useful for yards, customers, job sites, and cross-border identification.
For US-bound carriers, the separate legal door-marking requirement is the FMCSA USDOT display rule.
Your CVOR number appears on your CVOR certificate document from MTO. If you've lost it, retrieve it through MTO's Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration office at 1-800-387-7736 with your carrier safety rating information.
MTO inspection season
starts Monday.
Keep the Ontario CVOR certificate in the cab and keep fleet identifiers readable. If you cross into the US, make sure your USDOT legal-name and number display is built to FMCSA 49 CFR 390.21.
Blitz Survival GuideFrequently asked
questions.
- Q. 01
What compliance lettering does my commercial truck need in Ontario?
- Ontario CVOR operators must carry the CVOR certificate in the vehicle; O.Reg 424/97 does not require exterior CVOR number or operator-name display. For trucks operating into the United States, FMCSA 49 CFR 390.21 requires legal name and USDOT number display. Company name, unit numbers, CVOR references, and GVW decals remain useful for fleet presentation, customer identification, contracts, and internal operations.
- Q. 02
Can I use magnetic signs for my CVOR number?
- Ontario O.Reg 424/97 does not create an exterior CVOR display rule, so we do not claim an Ontario magnetic-sign prohibition for CVOR numbers. For professional fleet lettering and US-bound USDOT markings, permanent vinyl is the durable standard and avoids the practical risk of removable signs being lost or unreadable.
- Q. 03
What happens if my truck is pulled over without compliant CVOR decals?
- Ontario inspectors can ask for the CVOR certificate carried in the cab. There is no verified Ontario fine or out-of-service rule for missing exterior CVOR decals in O.Reg 424/97. If you operate into the United States, missing or unreadable USDOT markings can create FMCSA compliance problems.
- Q. 04
Do I need different decals for my tractor vs my trailer?
- Ontario does not require exterior CVOR numbers under O.Reg 424/97. Trailers may still need separate unit numbers, ownership marks, lease identifiers, or customer-required markings under fleet and contract arrangements. Contact us for fleet-specific layout guidance.
