Step-by-Step Application

1

Clean the surface

3 min

Wipe the door area with isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free cloth. Use firm pressure to remove road film, bug splatter, wax, and diesel residue. Let dry completely — 2 minutes in warm weather, longer if cold. This is the most critical step. Dirty surfaces cause edge peeling.

2

Measure and mark your position

3 min

Decide where the top of your lettering goes. For CVOR on cab doors, most operators place the top of letters about 1/3 down from the top of the door. Use masking tape as a horizontal guideline. Measure from a fixed reference point on both doors so they match.

3

Dry-position the decal

1 min

Hold the decal (backing still on) against the door to confirm size and fit. Are the letters big enough to read easily? Does the full text fit without crowding? If using multiple lines (CVOR + name), position them both before applying either.

4

Peel the backing paper

1 min

Hold the decal face-down. Peel the white backing paper away at a 45-degree angle — the vinyl letters stay on the clear transfer tape. If any letter sticks to the backing, press it back to the transfer tape and try again more slowly.

5

Apply and squeegee

3 min

Align the transfer tape top edge with your masking tape guideline. Lightly press one corner to anchor, then lay the rest down. Use your squeegee from the centre outward in overlapping firm strokes — cover every letter. You should see the letters settle flat against the surface.

6

Peel the transfer tape

2 min

Wait 5 minutes. Then peel the transfer tape back at 180 degrees — flat against the surface, not pulling away from it. Go slowly. If a letter lifts, stop, press it back down, re-squeegee, wait another 2 minutes, then try again.

7

Inspect and repeat on the other side

5 min

Check every letter is fully adhered with no lifted edges. Then repeat steps 1-6 on the opposite side of the truck. Match the height to your measurements from step 2. Both sides must be at the same height to look professional and meet O.Reg 424/97.

Common Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

  • Applying on a dirty surface — edges will peel within days. Always clean with IPA first.
  • Applying in cold weather — below 10°C, adhesive does not activate properly. Wait for warmer conditions or apply indoors.
  • Pulling transfer tape too fast — letters lift. Slow 180-degree peel only.
  • Not using a guideline — letters go on crooked. Masking tape guideline takes 60 seconds and saves you from redoing it.
  • Not squeegeeing firmly enough — air bubbles stay. Press hard and cover every letter twice.
