Where Assembly Point Signs Are Required

  • Workplaces with 20+ employees — OHSA requires documented emergency procedures and designated assembly areas
  • Schools and daycares — designated gathering areas for each classroom wing
  • Multi-unit residential buildings — condominiums and apartments with fire safety plans
  • Industrial facilities — factories, warehouses, chemical storage areas
  • Construction sites — temporary assembly points that move as site layout changes

Best Practices for Assembly Point Placement

Assembly points should be located at least 15 metres from the building, away from fire department access routes, and on firm ground accessible year-round. If your assembly point is in a parking lot, ensure it won't be blocked by parked vehicles during business hours. Many Ontario workplaces use lettered zones (Zone A, Zone B) so supervisors can account for all employees at their designated point.
