What MTO Officers Check During a Roadside Inspection

Ontario MTO Commercial Vehicle Officers (CVOs) conduct roadside inspections based on the North American Standard Inspection Program (NAS). Here's what they check related to compliance markings:

Inspection Levels

• Level I (Full) — Complete vehicle and driver inspection. Takes 45–90 minutes. Checks all markings, documents, and mechanical condition.
• Level II (Walk-Around) — Driver documents + exterior vehicle check. Takes 15–30 minutes. Markings checked from outside.
• Level III (Driver Only) — Licence, log book, medical certificate. Takes 10–15 minutes. May not check vehicle markings.

How to Prepare for an MTO Inspection

1. Pre-trip check your lettering — walk around the truck and confirm CVOR number and name are visible and undamaged
2. Carry your CVOR certificate and abstract — have both in the cab, easily accessible
3. Keep lettering clean — salt, mud, and snow can obscure markings. Clean doors regularly in winter
4. Replace damaged lettering immediately — cracked, peeling, or faded lettering will fail inspection
5. Match everything to your CVOR — if your company name changed, update your CVOR AND your door lettering
