What MTO Officers Check During a Roadside Inspection
Ontario MTO Commercial Vehicle Officers (CVOs) conduct roadside inspections based on the North American Standard Inspection Program (NAS). Here's what they check related to compliance markings:
| Check Point | What They Look For | Consequence of Failure |
|---|---|---|
| CVOR Number | Displayed on both cab doors, 50mm+ letters, contrasting colour | $200–$20,000 fine + CVOR points |
| Operator Name | Exact match to CVOR certificate on both doors | $200–$20,000 fine + CVOR points |
| GVW Display | Gross vehicle weight rating visible (if required) | Deficiency noted on report |
| Unit Number | Fleet identification number matching CVOR fleet list | Documentation deficiency |
| CVOR Certificate | Valid certificate carried in vehicle | $200–$20,000 fine |
| Vehicle Condition | Lights, brakes, tires, coupling, load security | Out-of-service order possible |
| Driver Documents | Valid licence, log book (if applicable), medical certificate | Out-of-service order possible |
Inspection Levels
- Level I (Full) — Complete vehicle and driver inspection. Takes 45–90 minutes. Checks all markings, documents, and mechanical condition.
- Level II (Walk-Around) — Driver documents + exterior vehicle check. Takes 15–30 minutes. Markings checked from outside.
- Level III (Driver Only) — Licence, log book, medical certificate. Takes 10–15 minutes. May not check vehicle markings.
How to Prepare for an MTO Inspection
- Pre-trip check your lettering — walk around the truck and confirm CVOR number and name are visible and undamaged
- Carry your CVOR certificate and abstract — have both in the cab, easily accessible
- Keep lettering clean — salt, mud, and snow can obscure markings. Clean doors regularly in winter
- Replace damaged lettering immediately — cracked, peeling, or faded lettering will fail inspection
- Match everything to your CVOR — if your company name changed, update your CVOR AND your door lettering
