Who Needs a Drone Registration Label?

Transport Canada requires all drones weighing 250 grams or more to be registered before flying outdoors in Canada. Once registered, your drone must display the registration number on its exterior so it can be read without tools.

This applies whether you fly for fun or for work. It applies to every flight, every time.

If your drone weighs less than 250 grams, registration is generally not required — but adding accessories or modifications that push the weight to 250 grams or more will trigger the requirement.

Not sure if your drone needs registration? See our guide: Do I Need to Register My Drone in Canada? →

Penalties for non-compliance: Transport Canada may fine recreational operators up to $5,000 and commercial operators up to $25,000 for flying without proper registration and marking.

  • • Flat section of a landing arm
  • • Any exterior surface visible during ground inspection

❌ Avoid

  • • Near propellers (vibration + heat)
  • • On the battery (gets swapped)

Drone Registration Label FAQ

Do I need to register my drone in Canada?

If your drone weighs 250 grams or more, yes. Registration with Transport Canada is required before flying outdoors. Drones under 250 grams generally do not need registration unless accessories push the weight to 250 grams or more. For full details, see our guide:

Where does the registration label go on my drone?

On the exterior of the drone body, visible without tools. The top of the main body or a landing arm works well. Avoid placing it near propellers or on parts that are frequently removed.

How big does the label need to be?

Transport Canada requires the registration number to be clearly visible. There is no specific minimum font size in the regulations — the key requirement is legibility. We size labels to be clearly readable on common drone frames.

What colour should the label be?

The registration number needs to be clearly visible against the drone body. We produce labels in colour combinations that contrast with your drone. If your drone is dark, we use light text (and vice versa).

How long do the labels last?

Our vinyl is rated for 5+ years of outdoor use. UV-resistant, waterproof, and adhesive-backed for permanent application.

Do I also need a pilot certificate?

Yes — Transport Canada requires a drone pilot certificate for drones 250g and above. The certificate can be printed or kept electronically. Transport Canada does not require a physical plastic card.

Can I use a marker instead of a label?

Transport Canada allows permanent marker, permanent labels, or engraving. However, marker fades quickly in outdoor conditions. A printed vinyl label stays legible through rain, sun, and vibration. Most operators find labels more practical and durable.
